Stéphane Catalano was born in Versailles (France) in 1960. Son of a French mother and an Italian father, he spends his early childhood in Montreal before returning to Versailles.
At age 11, he is already attracted to the two-colour process and makes drawings with Indian ink of cartoon creatures, landscapes, animals and graphic abstracts.
Shortly afterwards he discovers the Castle of Versailles which he has the good fortune of visiting many times during his childhood and adolescence.
Dazzled by the beauty of the Château and its gardens, Stéphane Catalano has most definitely been influenced by the architectural splendour, the artistic richness, the omnipresence of gilding, the historical dimension and the almost esoteric force of this monument listed as world patrimony by UNESCO.
At the age of 14, he starts learning cabinetmaking and 3 years later starts working for different craftsmen in the region of Versailles where he learns to sculpture wood, marquetry and the restoration of antiques.
A few years later and after travelling the world, he settles down in Spain, in the native town of Salvador Dali who he strongly admires.
At this point, he makes his first creations after having learned the use of gold leaf while working in the neighbourhood of Versailles for a gilding company with a 7 generations long reputation.
This experience was a real revelation to him.
Back in Canada, or more precisely in the eastern part of Quebec, Stéphane Catalano, international contemporary artist, creates exceptional pieces of art.
By mixing the art of drawing with Indian ink and the technique of applying gold leaf, Stéphane Catalano is the precursor of this artistic style and the inventor a completely unique concept.
His drawings, whether figurative or geometric, sometimes in 3D or with optical illusions, seem alive and change with the light and the space where they are exposed accordingly to the angle of perception.
His creations belong in the most varied styles and atmospheres; they are exposed in Europe, North Africa, North America and soon in China, India and the Arab Emirates.
By request of his customers, he personalises his creations and thus satisfies the most narrowly-targeted orders. All his creations are delivered with a certificate of authenticity.

Stephane Catalano joined Fine Art America on October 18th, 2012.
